BPD Therapy plus Medication Management
Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) Treatment in Boston & Newton, MA and California
Warm, evidence-based care for emotional intensity, relationship patterns, and identity clarity
Living with BPD—or wondering if you might have it—can feel exhausting. You may swing between feeling too much and feeling nothing at all. Relationships might feel like lifelines one moment and overwhelming the next. You might move through the world with a mix of sensitivity, fear, and strength that few people fully understand.
I’m Dr. Adam Henderson, a Harvard-trained psychiatrist specializing in borderline personality disorder, emotional dysregulation, and complex trauma. My approach is steady, calm, and collaborative. My goal is simple: help you feel safer inside yourself, more connected in your relationships, and more in control of your life.
How I Treat BPD: A grounded, nonjudgmental relationship
People with BPD are often unfairly labeled or misunderstood. Here, you’re met with compassion, clarity, and a pace that feels safe—not rushed.
Mentalization-Based Therapy (MBT)
MBT helps you slow down, understand what you’re feeling, and make sense of your reactions in real time. It reduces black-and-white thinking, helps you navigate relationships with more confidence, and strengthens your sense of self.
I’ve used MBT extensively at McLean Hospital in the MBT Clinic and the Gunderson Outpatient Program.
Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)
Integrated when helpful to support:
Emotional regulation
Distress tolerance
Reducing impulsive reactions
Navigating conflict
Medication (if helpful)
While there’s no “BPD medication,” targeted prescribing can reduce anxiety, depression, sleep issues, or emotional reactivity—creating more stability for the therapy work.
Common BPD Symptoms I Help With
Many people recognize themselves in symptoms like:
Intense emotions that shift quickly
Fear of abandonment
Push-pull relationship patterns
Feeling empty or unsure who you are
Strong shame or self-criticism
Difficulty trusting others
Impulsivity or self-harm urges
Repeating patterns you can’t seem to break
These are understandable responses to earlier experiences—not character flaws. And they can change.

I work with adults who:
Have BPD or traits of BPD
Feel stuck in relationship cycles
Struggle with emotional intensity or identity
Carry trauma or attachment wounds
Want deeper, evidence-based therapy

What Healing Can Look Like
Most people come to me wanting to feel:

Less overwhelmed by emotions
More secure in relationships
Clearer about who they are
Better able to pause before reacting
More hopeful about the future
With consistent support, these changes are possible.
